Vista and SBS 2003 R2

In order to install Vista on SBS you must install various fixes on the server, these are in a KB926505

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/926505

Points to note are that the ISA firewall client that ships with SBS is not compatible with Vista but there is a new version as described in the KB article.

Microsoft have also produced some more general FAQs as below

0845 Local Rate Numbers

We have just purchased an 0845 number for our IT support helpdesk where we take calls from our business support customers, usually with networks and or servers.

There are many ways of buying one of these numbers we went for what I consider to be the best option which was a one off fee with no ongoing charges from http://www.ttnc.co.uk/numbers/0845.do we got a really memorable number for just £395+VAT and get a login to the control panel to change the number that the 0845 'maps' to i.e. a landline (free) or a mobile (16p a minute). You can also setup a hunt group so that if a number is engaged it will try another, or divert to their voicemail system that then emails you the message in a .wav file, it even gives you stats on the calls i.e. were they answered, line engaged, did the caller hangup - this can all be downloaded in Excel, all for free! It was a painless, automated and instant setup, can't say fairer than that.

Watch out as we did find a really good number on a site 0845 1 21 22 23 and when we called it was gone, when we asked how long they said 'they did not know' they then proceeded to try and sell us a whole range of RUBBISH 0845 numbers. This is obviously a ploy to get callers so watch out for these guys and similar bad sites http://www.centurytelecom.co.uk/PhoneNumbers/0845/0845Memorablenumbers.htm

There are free numbers offered out there but these are generally not very memorable - if you don't require a good number then they are fine.

How does the telco company make their money? Well, UK callers are charged 1p off peak and 3.9p peak. Some of this revenue goes to the them. Beware because there are potentially three types of charges or a mixture of all of them:
  • Upfront fee for number
  • Ongoing annual or monthly service fee
  • Ongoing call charge fee, normally 2p a minute for incoming calls to your 0845
Steer clear of anyone who is charging an incoming call fee (including BT), this is taking the mick as they already earn revenue. If you really want a number badly you may have to go with a company that charges an ongoing service fee, not much you can do about it if you really want a particular number.

There are various levels of number.....
  • Bronze - Generally free but not a very good number
  • Silver - Sometimes cost not great numbers either
  • Gold - Normally pay for the number and they are okay
  • Special - Can be from £395 to £50,000 even these are not always so 'special' - shop around
